The pioneer spirit is alive and well in the eastern Oregon community of Milton-Freewater. The school district here has implemented a unique program called a “walking school bus,” and residents young and old are responding positively. It’s part of the community’s efforts to keep children safe going to and from school, and it’s in addition to new sidewalks and street improvements, thanks to the Safe Routes to School program. The city also recently improved safety through downtown by using the road diet approach.
Students at Gib Olinger Elementary School benefited from volunteers who
– Help Kids get exercise.
– Help teach pedestrian skills.
– Help get cars off the road and ease traffic congestion at the new school.
– Get exercise themselves
