When many people think of SRTS education, they picture students riding bikes which can be a challenge for some schools to take on or too advanced for younger learners. We know that everyone is a pedestrian at some point in their day, so the Jump Start pedestrian safety education program is perfect for elementary aged students across Oregon at every school to engage them in Safe Routes and to build their independence young.

Like with the bicycle side of the Jump Start program, staff are available to train your local PE teachers to teach our pedestrian safety curriculum to their students in a quick training that takes about 2 hours. This curriculum contains 5 lessons that are aligned with PE and health standards and is geared towards grades K – 3 with additional challenges available to keep it relevant for grades 4 and 5.

Best of all, we have pedestrian safety education kits available for schools to borrow to make teaching the program a breeze with mock roadways and crosswalks, bilingual English and Spanish vocab cards, street sign cards, a pedestrian crossing rhyme poster, and a handy drill guide to help teachers remember how to set up the day’s activities.
