New to Safe Routes to School? Here are 5 steps to start your journey.

1. Connect with your Regional Hub.

    • ODOT SRTS has three Regional Hubs consisting of a lead facilitator, practitioners from the region, school officials, and ODOT professionals. Hubs meet monthly, and participants share resources, talk through challenges, and support each other in improving SRTS efforts throughout the region.
    • Your Regional Hub Lead can also match you to an established SRTS practitioner in your region through our Mentorship Program. Your SRTS mentor will meet with you during your first year to help you get your programming started.

2. Find resources to get organized.

3. Organize a Walk+Roll to School Day!

    • Walk+Roll to School Days are a great way to get students and their families excited about Safe Routes. Free incentives and resources are available for all Walk+Roll events to help you plan your events!

4. Schedule a Jump Start training.

    • With the Jump Start program, ODOT Technical Assistance Providers lead on-the-ground bike and pedestrian safety training to PE teachers and SRTS practitioners, give you a comprehensive and customizable safety curriculum, and provide access to our bike fleet and pedestrian safety toolkit. Learn more and sign up for a training today!

5. Find funding.

    • Funding can take your SRTS program to the next level. ODOT offers both education and construction grants, and project planning services. Our funding page is updated frequently with these and other funding opportunities, so be sure to check it out.
